Brave

Overview

Brave is a Chromium-based browser that blocks advertisements and trackers by default, requiring no extensions or configuration. Founded by Brendan Eich, the creator of JavaScript and co-founder of Mozilla, Brave aims to make privacy the default rather than an opt-in feature. It is fully compatible with Chrome extensions while stripping out Google's tracking infrastructure.

The browser includes Brave Shields, which blocks ads, trackers, fingerprinting scripts, and third-party cookies automatically. A built-in Tor window provides anonymous browsing without installing additional software.

Privacy Features

Brave's Shields system blocks over 40% more trackers than competing browsers out of the box. Fingerprint randomisation makes it harder for websites to identify you across sessions. HTTPS connections are automatically upgraded where possible. The browser removes tracking parameters from URLs and blocks bounce tracking, a technique that circumvents traditional cookie blocking.

Who Should Use It

Brave is ideal for users who want strong privacy protection without spending time configuring settings or installing extensions. If you are currently using Chrome and want to keep your extensions while gaining privacy, Brave is the most straightforward migration path. The optional Brave Rewards programme can be disabled entirely if you prefer.
