Atlas VPN is a relatively young VPN provider, founded in 2019 and acquired by Nord Security (the parent company of NordVPN and Surfshark) in 2021. Headquartered in New York, the service has positioned itself firmly at the budget end of the market, with long-term plans priced among the lowest available from any reputable provider. The server network consists of over 1,000 servers across 40+ countries — modest by industry standards but sufficient for most everyday use cases.

The free tier provides 5GB of monthly data with access to servers in three locations (Los Angeles, New York, and Amsterdam), making it suitable for occasional use but too limited for daily browsing. Paid plans include unlimited simultaneous connections and access to the full server network. Atlas VPN uses WireGuard and IKEv2 protocols, notably lacking OpenVPN support, and provides native apps for Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and streaming devices — though Linux users are left without a client.

Privacy and Security

Atlas VPN's privacy stance is complicated by its US jurisdiction. Operating from New York places the service firmly within the Five Eyes intelligence alliance, subject to US surveillance laws including FISA and potential National Security Letters. The company states it operates a no-logs policy, though independent verification through comprehensive third-party audits has been limited compared to more established competitors.

The acquisition by Nord Security provides some reassurance, as the parent company has a track record of investing in privacy infrastructure and independent audits. Atlas VPN uses WireGuard encryption (ChaCha20 for data, Curve25519 for key exchange), which provides strong security by default. The SafeSwap feature rotates the user's IP address periodically without disconnecting, adding a layer of privacy for browsing sessions. The SafeBrowse feature provides DNS-level blocking of malicious websites. The kill switch is available on all platforms and prevents traffic leakage during connection drops.

Performance

Atlas VPN delivers reasonable speeds using WireGuard, with nearby server connections retaining 72-82% of baseline performance. This is adequate for most daily tasks including streaming, video calls, and general browsing. The smaller server network means fewer options for finding an optimal nearby server, and users in regions with limited server coverage may experience slower speeds due to the longer distance to available servers.

Streaming support is available on paid plans, with Atlas VPN able to access Netflix US and some other regional libraries, BBC iPlayer, and Disney+. Reliability is reasonable but not as consistent as the top-tier streaming VPNs. Torrenting is supported on designated servers. The free tier is significantly more limited, with slower speeds and only three server locations, making it suitable only for light, occasional use.

Verdict

Atlas VPN is a serviceable budget VPN that delivers the basics at an extremely competitive price. The unlimited connections, simple interface, and SafeSwap feature add value, and the Nord Security backing provides a degree of credibility and resources that many budget VPNs lack. However, the US jurisdiction, limited server network, lack of Linux support, absence of OpenVPN, and minimal independent auditing are all legitimate concerns. Atlas VPN is best suited for casual users and those on tight budgets who want basic VPN protection without the advanced privacy features or extensive server networks offered by more established providers. Users with serious privacy requirements should consider alternatives with stronger jurisdictional protections and more comprehensive auditing.
